Adobe Flash is a popular software application for the purpose of adding graphically rich animations and content to web pages and other rich media platforms. Originally developed by Macromedia in 1996, Flash was acquired along with its developer by Adobe Systems in late 2005.

The vector-based graphics used by Flash allow high quality animations while keeping file size low enough for use on the internet. Prior to the launch of Flash, web developers had largely been reliant on animated GIFs, which offered lower quality and in many cases bulky file sizes.

One downside of using the application so extensively is that it is notoriously search engine unfriendly. Although Google is now indexing Flash content, its fundamental structure still causes problems for search engine optimisation unless used with care.

To get the best results with Flash it's still advisable to avoid using it for navigation menus, embed it within an HTML page and use "noembed" attribute to describe the contents of the Flash file.

It is also difficult to include SEO elements such as bold text formatting, anchor text, headlines, alt tags etc. so they can be interpreted by search engines which are HTML focused. Additionally, some Flash which relies on JavaScript calls will still not be executed or crawled by Google, limited what will be indexed.
