Google top UK brand
Google is now the strongest brand in the UK, according to a recent survey.
In a report by research organization Superbrands, the Mountain View company was named number one out of 500 brands by 1,500 business professionals.
The list, which contains the best known names from the world of business, is calculated annually and is a measure of which firms have the most powerful reputations.
In taking top spot Google edged out search rival and computing giant Microsoft, who are perhaps better known for their software systems than as a major force in search.
Although first and second place are occupied by American firms, British companies have also made a strong showing.
“The top 10 positions are dominated by companies who are either British stalwarts such as BA and BP,” said Stephen Cheliotis of Superbrands, “.. or like GlaxoSmithKline [who] can trace their origins back to the UK,”
Mr Cheliotis added that, on average, companies in the top 50 have been established for 90 years; Google is the only company among them to have been founded after 1990.
To take first place in this year’s poll Google has toppled last year’s number one and that most revered of British institutions, the BBC, which has been relegated to fourth place overall.
The list in full:
1. Google
2. Microsoft
3. BP
4. BBC
5. GlaxoSmithKline
6. Rolls-Royce
7. Financial Times
8. BA
9. Fedex
10. Hertz
According to Superbrands, the list reflects the brands that have “established the finest reputations in their fields and make the most impact on the UK business sector”
It’s certainly remarkable to see how far Google has come in such a relatively short space of time. No less remarkable is the news that Microsoft now seem to maintain the second finest business reputation in the land.
